Evaluation 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

What are the conventions of a music video?

The common conventions of a normal music video are the following:

  • Relationship between the lyrics and the visuals
  • Relationship between the music and the visuals
  • Close ups of the artist/s and focus on them
  • Often cases of Voyuerism
  • Often cases of Intertextuality
  • Variety of locations

The conventions of our genre, Grime, were simplistic however it was key that we followed the conventions.

We interviewed many to see what they would expect to see in a grime video. These are the key things everyone said.

What image does the combination of these products create?

The common image that follows all three products are two main things:

1) The sense of location with the setting in London (London Eye, Brick Walls etc)

2) A common convention of grime through the clothing with sportswear, common within all three media products.

Also, on the Digipak and Magazine advert the artists facial expression is serious, common within grime, and also to play on the 'Deadly Serious' theme.

Evaluation 3) What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Throughout our media coursework we have found that gaining audience feedback was vital in order to make sure that our project went to the best of its ability.

Our first bit of feedback we felt necessary was right after we had picked our song, 'Deadly Serious' to research the grime genre, because that was the type of song we had picked.

We found it easy to use the video cameras and go around school and ask various people boys and girls on what they felt were the conventions on grime so that we could use these and incorporate them into our video.



From this we were able to get a good idea of what to include in our video such as locations, clothing, props etc. One thing we found in advance was the need for large groups of people in grime videos so we made sure that we gave a lot of people who were to appear in the video a lot of notice so that they could all make the shoot.

Another vital question to research was what people should wear in grime videos. Along with doing individual research we interviewd someone and got there perspective on what the clothing trend is in grime videos.






Once learning from the audience feedback about what they expect to see in a grime video, and what they think that people should be wearing within the video to represent grime, we started to come up with ideas and an artist image, and ideas for the video.

We presented two ideas for the video to our class and recorded their feedback.



From that feedback we got a good idea on what people wanted us to do with our video. We saw that from asking everyone, the costume was vital and so was the location, and therefore we went out and researched mise en scene within grime.

We put together the two following presentations, based on the feedback we got on our ideas.

With the feedback and research we had gained so far, we then decided to come up with two main storylines for our video. We presented the class with these ideas and then recorded there feedback.




We created a questionnaire and personally asked people, and recorded there answers to get a better idea for our music video.

1) What would you expect to see in a UK Grime music video?

2) Where would you expect a UK Grime music video to be set?

3) Are these types of music videos dark and sinister, or bright and cheery?

4) Do you expect to see women in a very male Grime song?

5) What is common in UK Grime music?


Kofi B

1) I would expect to see a bunch of boys in hoodies looking mysterious, one dominant boy. A very intimidating enviroment if you are the viewer.

2) I would expect it to be set in a dark, dingy estate maybe. Depending on lyrics could be in a very busy place. Also could be a story in which the video is shot at many different places.

3) Uusually dark, not sinister. But from viewing many grime videos i think some are bright and cheery. It usually depends on the artist themselves.

4) Depending on lyrics, yes but if the lyrics do not warrant women than I do not expect to see women.

5) Hoodies, nike trainers and addidas hoodies. Lots of young males are common. Usually of a black and white colour.


Tanuj Bhalla

1) I would expect to see lots of flash cars, people smoking and big gangs of people. A mixture of boys and girls.

2) In a club with lots of young females dancing around lots of young males. Also in an urban environment.

3) Bit of both, depends on the artist and his taste in music.

4) Yeah, they act as a rebound for the males and play an important role in the music video itself.

5) Black people are common, a lot of artists are black so therefore the majority wins. Also violence is a convention which I have seen is common.

Miss Kulas

1) Lots of boys in hoodies and tracksuits walking around and waving their hands about. They are usually talking about themselves and how great they are. They will be on estates and in London.

2) Rough parts of London, estates, places that have a lot of graffiti on the wall. Mainly outside.

3)Definitely not bright and cheery, but they are not usually sinister. For example, Dizzee Rascal's Holiday is quite upbeat.

4) Not really. It's usually a lot of boys walking around with their 'crew'.

5) Hoodies, boys, tracksuits, branded sports wear.



After taking all these ideas in we carried on with the construction of our music video and also made a start on our Digipak and Magazine advert. We produced a first draft of the Digipak and Advert and asked people in the class of what there take on it was.

After getting feedback on our magazine advert, we realised that it did not feel professional enough and had not used the full photoshop skills, and decided to re-do it so that it would fit more with the conventions of our genre, link to our Digipak and also look professional as well.

We then got feedback on the first draft of the video in full. We got a lot of criticisms of certain scenes.

1) The scene in which there was the artist wearing a Scream mask, was felt to be irrelevant to the video and acted to comedic and ruined the 'serious' theme towards the video.









2) The enigma code at the beginning of showing parts of the artists body and London before seeing his face was ruined because we made a mistake by showing the artists face before he had started rapping, when the idea was to let the song build up to the first line and that would be where the artist would be first scene.


3) Another scene that our teachers especially did not like was the punchbag scene after the fight. From feedback, we found that it would be best to put the punchbag scene before the fight, so that it was a build up to the fight, instead of it coming afterwards.





4) The scene where the camera focuses on the studio producer turning down the dials, was originally placed on the last chorus, however, many told us that it would be better to put that scene right towards the end as it would signal the end of the song.



We also used the internet networking programme FACEBOOK to help us, as we created a group and invited people to it and it allowed them to look out our media work and write comments and answer the questions we had on display.

Another thing we did to gain feedback was use the Video Booth on the Apple Macs and after everything had been created we got people who we had interviewed in the creation stages and asked them to come back and give there views on the finished product. Here is one example.





Overall audience feedback has helped us greatly throughout our project for the following main reasons:

1) Helped us get an idea of the key conventions of a grime music video
2) Helped us with our choice of locations and casting, as well as wardrobe
3) Helped us notice small details that were wrong with our first drafts of the Digipak
4) Honest criticism allowed us to edit and improve the video and digipak

Evaluation 4) How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

There were a lot of new media technologies that we used to help us throughout our construction of the video and Digipak.

New Media Technologies is what we commonly use today which is more regularly done by things such as the Internet, computers, CD ROMS and new software's.

Common New Media that we use on a day to day basis is the Internet, and a software on the Internet that has become extremely popular is Facebook, a social networking site used by over 350 million people worldwide.
